Lay on them backs, Boston

Boston United emerged in 1933 in the wake of the demise of Boston FC taking the older club’s place in the Midland League and the Lincolnshire League.  The new club was unable to get agreement from the FA in time to take over Boston's entry to the FA Cup for the upcoming season.  Doug Lowe’s book recounts all their highs and lows in the competition since that date including the famous 6-1 victory over Derby County during the 1955-56 season.

After a narrative account of Boston United’s achievements in the competition, the book includes results, scorers and line-ups for all their FA Cup games.  Full details of the opposing team are also given.  Match reports of important games are included and a number of appendices include United’s players’ records (appearances and goals) and, for Boston’s opponents, an account of ‘where are they now’ and the leagues they were in when the clubs met in the competition.

The unusual title: "Lay on them backs, Boston" refers to advice shouted out by a Boston fan at a game in the 1950s to encourage Boston's wingers to attack. The book, which boasts a foreword by John Motson, is lavishly illustrated with action photographs, player portraits, programmes and match tickets.  Doug Lowe’s affection for the club is reflected throughout this fine publication which should be required reading for all Boston United fans.
